Associate Highly Specialist Speech and Language Therapist

Dr Anna Collins is the Highly Specialist Speech and Language Therapist within our SMART team. She has experience of working with children and young people with social communication difficulties and speech and language disorders including autism and developmental language disorder. She also provides speech and language assessments and intervention, as well as consultation to schools and other agencies.

Dr Collins has a special interest in the relationship between language and social communication and higher level language difficulties such as difficulties with inference skills. Her PhD thesis explored the developmental progression in awareness of social communication rules in children with typical language development, children with social communication difficulties including children with autism, and children with developmental language disorder.

In her previous NHS role Dr Collins was the Lead Speech and Language Therapist for Speech and Language Disorders, offering assessment, diagnosis and treatment for a range of speech, language and communication difficulties. She has worked in a variety of settings including Mainstream Primary and Secondary Schools, Nurseries and Children’s Centres, Special Needs Schools and Language Resourced Provisions for children with severe and persistent speech disorders and children with developmental language disorder. She has held university lectureship roles and research posts within the field of Speech and Language Therapy.
