Assessment and Therapy

Ms. Miriam Shieldhouse has experience of working with adults presenting with a range of complex and enduring mental health problems including dual diagnosis difficulties, e.g. personality difficulties,  sexual abuse, self-harm, substance misuse, anger management and learning disability. Ms Shieldhouse applies both traditional and individualised CBT approaches (e.g. trauma focused CBT or when working with perpetrators of domestic abuse), as well as providing Schema Therapy for clients with more enduring personality difficulties and underlying beliefs which can be typically resistant to more traditional forms of CBT.

Ms Shieldhouse’s previous clinical experience includes being clinical lead within a secure forensic setting for women with personality disorder.

Legal Work

Ms Shieldhouse undertakes instructions relating to both public and private child care proceedings, and also criminal proceedings. Ms Shieldhouse obtained the Family Law Expert Witness Certificate from Cardiff University Law School in 2011, having worked as an expert witness already for 6 years. Ms Shieldhouse is experienced in assessing both adult and older children covering a range of issues. Specialist subjects include domestic abuse, substance misuse, young parents, learning disability, and assessment of adult attachment to the child as well as expert realistic evaluation of parents' amenability for therapy, which therapy is most likely to be effective and practical timescales for meaningful change.

Ms Shieldhouse has taught on psychology post graduate courses at Bangor University and Social Work degree Courses.
